Optimized Launch and Recovery System

J. K. Subsea Engineering Pvt. Ltd. manufactures the Optimized Launch and Recovery System, Model No. JK-LARS-SB-ALPHA-OPT, a single basket diver launch and recovery system built for commercial diving operators running shallower water projects where full class certification is not required. This optimized LARS carries the same twin winch, rated A-frame, and self-contained hydraulic power unit architecture used across our class approved range, paired with a mild steel two diver basket and a 50 metre depth rating. Designed in line with IMCA D018 and D023 guidelines, it gives diving contractors a properly engineered, tested launch and recovery system at a lower cost and shorter lead time than a fully classed unit, and it folds down to fit a standard 20 ft shipping container for easy mobilisation.

What is the Optimized Launch and Recovery System?

The Optimized Launch and Recovery System is a streamlined version of our single basket LARS, designed for diving contractors who need a reliable, IMCA guideline compliant diver launch and recovery system without the cost and lead time of full class approval. It uses the same twin winch, A-frame, and hydraulic power unit architecture as our class approved LARS, but with a mild steel basket and a reduced 50 metre depth rating, making it a practical choice for shallower water commercial diving projects where class certification is not a contractual requirement. The result is a LARS system that keeps the operational reliability divers depend on, at a price point that fits smaller projects and tighter budgets.

Key Features of the Optimized Launch and Recovery System

Our optimized single basket LARS, also used as a budget diver launch and recovery system, is engineered to handle two diver deployment and recovery reliably for shallower water commercial diving work.

  • IMCA Guideline Compliant Design: Designed in line with IMCA D018 and D023 guidelines for diving plant and surface oriented diving systems.
  • Integrated Emergency Breathing Air Storage: Holds 2 x 50 litre x 200 bar breathing air cylinders as bailout supply, with an integrated storage cage for diving tools and accessories.
  • Twin Independent Hydraulic Winches: One winch for the basket and one for the guide wire, each on its own hydraulic power pack for full redundancy if one system fails.
  • Dedicated Guide Weight Winch: Double reeved through the guide weight to the A-frame, rated for 1 ton SWL and tested to 1.5 tons.
  • 350 kg Clump Weight for Stability: Reduces the effect of underwater currents on the diver’s umbilical, improving control and operational safety.
  • Weatherproof Electrical Control: Star and Delta starters in rubber-lined, weatherproof steel control boxes, finished with double coat marine epoxy paint.
  • Mild Steel Diving Basket: Two diver capacity basket built from marine grade mild steel, offering a durable, cost-effective alternative to stainless steel construction.
  • Rated A-Frame with Skid: Primary A-frame rated for 1.5 tons, with a hydraulically operated extending ram and dual lock valves for safe, controlled positioning.
  • Man Riding Main Winch: Set hydraulically for close to 1 ton and tested to 1.2 tons as per IMCA, running at 18 m per minute with a 150 metre, 13 mm diameter wire.
  • Self-Contained Hydraulic Power Unit: 20 HP electric motor driving a twin motor positive displacement pump, with high oil temperature display and emergency stop as standard safety features.
  • Container-Ready, 20 ft Footprint: Folds down to fit a standard 20 ft shipping container in resting position, cutting mobilisation and shipping costs.

Applications of the Optimized Launch and Recovery System

Our optimized launch and recovery system supports commercial diving operations in shallower water where full class certification is not required.

Shallow Water Diving Support: Handles diver deployment and recovery to 50 metres, suited to inshore and nearshore commercial diving work.

Diving Support Vessel Operations: A compact, deck-mountable LARS that fits DSVs and barges without consuming excessive deck space.

Harbour and Port Diving Projects: Supports diving operations for port maintenance, jetty inspection, and harbour construction work.

Budget-Conscious Diving Contractors: Gives smaller diving operations access to a properly engineered LARS without the cost of class certification.

Remote and Mobile Diving Projects: Container-ready transport makes this system practical for projects requiring frequent relocation.

Backup or Secondary LARS Unit: A cost-effective second system for fleets that already operate a class approved LARS on their primary vessel.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Optimized Launch and Recovery System

What is the Optimized Launch and Recovery System used for?
It safely launches and recovers commercial divers from a vessel or barge in shallower water diving operations, using an A-frame, twin hydraulic winches, and a mild steel diving basket.
What is a LARS in commercial diving?
LARS stands for Launch and Recovery System, the equipment used to lower a diving basket into the water and lift it back out in a controlled way, keeping divers safe from vessel movement and sea state during entry and exit.
How is this different from the CCS class approved LARS?
This system uses a mild steel basket instead of stainless steel, has a 50 metre depth rating instead of 75 metres, and is designed to IMCA guidelines without third-party class certification, making it a more cost-effective option.
How many divers does this LARS support?
The basket is designed for two divers, with full headroom and integrated emergency breathing air cylinders for each.
What happens if one winch fails?
The main winch and guide weight winch each run on independent hydraulic power packs, so one system can provide backup if the other fails.
What depth can this system operate to?
The Optimized LARS has a depth capability of 50 metres under seawater.
Does the system fit into a shipping container for transport?
Yes, it folds down to fit into a standard 20 ft shipping container in its resting position.
What is the safe working load of this LARS?
The system has a safe work load (SWL) of 2 tons, with the A-frame rated for 1.5 tons and the winches individually rated and tested beyond 1 ton.
Is this LARS suitable for offshore oil and gas diving?
Yes, it is suited to shallower water offshore and nearshore diving support work, including platform inspection, harbour maintenance, and subsea construction where a 50 metre depth rating is sufficient.
What power supply does the LARS require?
It runs on a 380-440 VAC, 3 phase, 50-60 Hz power supply to drive the hydraulic power unit and winch system.
Can the Optimized LARS be upgraded to a class approved system later?
The core architecture, A-frame, winches, and HPU, matches our class approved range, so contractors planning to scale up should speak with our team about class approval options for future projects.
Who manufactures the Optimized Launch and Recovery System?
J. K. Subsea Engineering Pvt. Ltd. manufactures the Optimized Launch and Recovery System for commercial diving and offshore operations.
